about

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels have announced new single ‘Idiot’. The track is the latest from the Hull band’s upcoming new album, The Optometrist.

Blending infectious pop melodies with punk-rock sensibilities, the track is a call-to-action for "phoney culture war influencers and fake news pseudo-prophets everywhere”, sharply delivered by singer Matt’s fierce but tongue-in-cheek lyrical message: “think the lyrical commentary of Yard Act crossed with the bubblegum singalongs of The Lovely Eggs with a touch of snarling Jon Spencer guitar thrown in for good measure.”

The track follows alt-glam stomper 'Mirror Shoes', with both singles giving an insight of what to expect from the new album.

Matt Edible has been one of the leading members of Hull’s music scene for many years. From fronting cult avant-pop heroes Edible 5ft Smiths to leading BBC Radio 6 Music favourites The Holy Orders, he has consistently produced memorable and captivating music.

Following Matt Edible & the Obtuse Angels’ 2018 debut album, Stairgazing, Matt locked himself down — quite literally thanks to Covid — and went to work forging an even more ambitious collection of songs for the follow-up. He began to record by himself at home and then recruited new band members John Andrew (Kingmaker) and Sarah Shiels to make the project glow.

lyrics

Let me introduce myself I’m just a normal guy
Of average intelligence and I like to question why
But I’m only hearing answers from so-called “experts” on TV
What about the thoughts of normal people just like you and me?
Sure I haven’t studied medicine or got a law degree
I’ve never worked in politics or the economy
But I don’t think I should just keep quiet and sit on the fence
I’m gonna tell you what I think
All from my common sense

Cos I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
A signed up card-carrying Idiot
I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
If you know what’s good for you you’ll keep away from me

Now they’re making up diseases just for sellin’ us the cure
Sure they studied hard for saving lives but soon they wanted more
Now instead of healing people they started to make us sick
And they cooked a load of medicine to sell for huge profits
But you cannot trust the medicine cos if it really helped
We’d get better and stop buying it and limiting their wealth
They’re controlling us to stay indoors, in fact I really doubt
There’s any problem anyway so I’m just going out

Cos I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
A signed up card-carrying Idiot
I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
If you know what’s good for you you’ll keep away from me

You’re telling me the answers are clear enough to see
Don’t let the truth get in the way of good conspiracy
Yeah I’ve heard of Occam’s Razor and I’ll never shave with it
But if you think the same as me then you’re an Idiot too

Don’t smother me with experts who claim to have the proof
Just because they’ve researched this for years doesn’t make it the truth
You should hear those guys on the other side telling us what’s right
Open up your minds to them and see what’s in plain sight
Like I know what makes a woman I know how to be a man
There’s nothing in between man it’s just science, nature’s plan
Don’t come at me with facts and nonsense about chromosomes
Those brave truth-tellers tell me all I need to know

I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
A signed up card-carrying Idiot
I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
If you know what’s good for you you’ll keep away from me

I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
A signed up card-carrying Idiot
I’m an Idiot
I’m an Idiot
If you know what’s good for you you’ll keep away from me

about

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels Hull, UK

Hull cult favourites Edible 5ft Smiths made one & a half of the greatest undiscovered albums of the noughties before burning up in a small blaze of glory, leaving broken hearts scattered in their wake. Since then Matt has fronted twisted rock combo The Holy Orders, all the while building up a collection of distinctly different songs of his own, more akin to a continuation of the Edibles catalogue. ... more
